A Mental-Health Crisis in Alabama’s Prisons
The death of Jamie Wallace brought the lack of mental health care provided for prisoners into the eyes of the general public. The 24 year old Wallace was suffering from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and was testifying against the lack of health care provided to him, but sadly he killed himself before the verdict could be given out. It brought to shame the Alabama department of corrections which is responsible for treating 14 prisons in Alabama, the judge ruled that some of the prison received no mental health treatment while the ones who got treatment it was adequate. The chairman of ADOC blamed overcrowding and understaffing for this problem. The blame can be pushed back and forth but a solution needs to found and it has to found as soon as possible because prison would just worsen the mental health of patients.
