Visions and Voices 2

Image
I attended the visions and voices event which had a panel of the producers, director and actors of the T.V. show Unreal . The show at Face value is about the intricacies of running a T.V. show such as the bachelor. However, on a much deeper level, it talks about issues in relation to sexism and racism. The T.V. show has two successful protagonists who crave money and power, thus it presents women in a way which is incongruous to the common perception of women. Adding to this, in the event all the people on the panel were female and thus they were able to speak about spoke their personal experiences with this topic. It was surprising to see that even in today's day and age all the members of the panel have had some issue with regarding sexism. People often scrutinized their ideas and at times were not taken seriously. Furthermore, the show also explores the theme of racism and with one of the members of the panel being African American spoke about the implicit discriminat...

End the war

Image
What topic are you choosing?  Why do you think this is a good candidate for this re-evaluation? Include images and links as available  I am choosing the anti-war movement (the 1960s) against the Vietnam war because of even decades later, the ideologies it presented are still relevant today. The movement was started because of the US involvement in the Vietnam war, with the average age of the soldier being 19,  the potential of the American youth was being wasted fighting a war in a foreign land and this was giving rise to all sorts of economic and social issues.  One of the major things this movement protested was the draft system which randomly selected young men to serve for war. This got the support of many celebrities included Mohammad Ali who protested heavily and was banned from boxing for 3 years as a result. This movement started off on college campuses and thus expanding upon this in history classes would remind students of the power they posse...

Democrats sit down

Image
Explain differing viewpoints on the best response to your topic issue On 11:29 am on June 23rd, 100 lawmakers sat on the floor of the house to protest against the stalling laws which promoted background checks before people bought guns. To voice their opinion further, the Democrats raised picket signs with the names of the people who have suffered from. Furthermore, they sang songs like  ‘We shall overcome’. Moreover, they broke the rules of the house by broadcasting the protest on Social Media and disrupted by the functioning of the house by chanting “No Bill, No break” and “Shame”. This protest undoubtedly got a lot of media attention for the 25 hours it lasted, however, critics claim that this was just a mere publicity stunt to showcase to the general public that the Democrats are making an effort to prevent gun violence to win votes in the election. Also, critics targeted the short duration of the protest claiming that if the Democrats really cared for change they wouldn’t...

Critiquing the representation of social justice

Image
After working with and writing on your chosen representation, critique the version or manifestation of social justice as defined/illustrated.  How does this depiction of social justice conflict with or work with the legal system? Social Justice can be defined as equity in terms of distribution of wealth, rights and resources within society. The movie Blood Diamond attempts to uncover the lack of this in third world countries as a direct result of the actions of first world countries while demonstrating the advantages people have for having white skin in certain societies. The movie highlights a practice which according to the law is considered smuggling and thus by those means cannot be considered social injustice, however, it is chain reaction caused by this smuggling that makes the practice unethical and socially unjust. The manifestation of social justice in The Blood Diamond is made explicit through the film's plot and central theme, however, throughout the movi...

Visons and voices 1

Image
The first Visions and Voices event I attended was called dance and social change. The evening initiated with a documentary of two African Americans dancing and getting arrested for doing so. which in my opinion is trying to portray that often people from the African American community get arrested for expressing their opinion, the documentary then focuses on the mental impact the imprisonment has on felons. The documentary ended with them getting released from prison and one of them unwilling to dance again. Thus portraying law enforcement as a negative reinforcement technique in order to kill the opinion of African Americans. The event then had a solo performance from the protagonist of the documentary where he dances to mimic an incident which he read in the newspaper about police brutality. He recreates an event where the victim clearly has his hands in the air but is still shot by the police. But ultimately he stands up, implying that people have to stand up in protest if ...
