Goodbye

Being an International Freshman, I was scared that my way of writing would be different from everyone else and that I wouldn't do well in this class. However, in hindsight, I was scared for no reason. I had a great time in this class while learning a lot as well. Coming into this class I didn't know the importance of social justice, but after this course, I have a whole new outlook on this topic. Even though I am business major the knowledge I gained in social justice is important because now I know that there is a lot of injustice in this world and that all of us should do our small bits to reduce this, furthermore through civil disobedience and  King  I learnt importance of standing up for myself regardless of popular opinion. From a writing perspective specifically, I improved in the area of pre-writing. Before this class I had no clue what JStor or Proquest was, also my way of incorporating the research into my papers was a lot less academic. Moreover, ...

Women and the Anti-war movement

Understanding Antiwar Activism as a Gendering Activity: A Look at the U.S.’s Anti-Vietnam War Movement  http://vc.bridgew.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1073&context=jiws This sources elaborates on the role women played in the Anti-war movement. One of the misconceptions of the anti-war movement that I will argue against in my paper is that the movement was male dominated. However, this academic paper also argues against that hence I will be able to use examples from this paper to support my claim. Moreover this paper includes counterclaims made by feminist scholars and works towards disproving that claim. Specifically the article centers upon two questions, in what ways is war protest a gendering experience? and How does antiwar activism shape ideas about gender, instead of the other way around? The analysis of these two questions relies on a combination of primary sources : documents written by antiwar activists o...

Visons and Voices 3

Image
The third visions and voices event was called “When we imprisoned our own” and it was about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during world war 2. The panellist spoke about how several Japanese American (including a few USC students) were incarcerated just because they were of Japanese descent. They spoke about the social justice negatives of this issue as one particular group was unfairly treated and related it to the possibility of a similar situation taking place again and measure to be taken if such a. thing is repeated. I went to this particular event because It is important to speak about this and spread awareness about the negatives in History so that we can learn from our mistakes and not repeat the same mistakes again. Moreover, it is also important to study this because it creates sympathy for the victims and that is really important because it showcases that acknowledgements have been made of the wrongdoing and such a thing will not be repeated again.

Visions and Voices 2

Image
I attended the visions and voices event which had a panel of the producers, director and actors of the T.V. show Unreal . The show at Face value is about the intricacies of running a T.V. show such as the bachelor. However, on a much deeper level, it talks about issues in relation to sexism and racism. The T.V. show has two successful protagonists who crave money and power, thus it presents women in a way which is incongruous to the common perception of women. Adding to this, in the event all the people on the panel were female and thus they were able to speak about spoke their personal experiences with this topic. It was surprising to see that even in today's day and age all the members of the panel have had some issue with regarding sexism. People often scrutinized their ideas and at times were not taken seriously. Furthermore, the show also explores the theme of racism and with one of the members of the panel being African American spoke about the implicit discriminat...

End the war

Image
What topic are you choosing?  Why do you think this is a good candidate for this re-evaluation? Include images and links as available  I am choosing the anti-war movement (the 1960s) against the Vietnam war because of even decades later, the ideologies it presented are still relevant today. The movement was started because of the US involvement in the Vietnam war, with the average age of the soldier being 19,  the potential of the American youth was being wasted fighting a war in a foreign land and this was giving rise to all sorts of economic and social issues.  One of the major things this movement protested was the draft system which randomly selected young men to serve for war. This got the support of many celebrities included Mohammad Ali who protested heavily and was banned from boxing for 3 years as a result. This movement started off on college campuses and thus expanding upon this in history classes would remind students of the power they posse...

Democrats sit down

Explain differing viewpoints on the best response to your topic issue On 11:29 am on June 23rd, 100 lawmakers sat on the floor of the house to protest against the stalling laws which promoted background checks before people bought guns. To voice their opinion further, the Democrats raised picket signs with the names of the people who have suffered from. Furthermore, they sang songs like  ‘We shall overcome’. Moreover, they broke the rules of the house by broadcasting the protest on Social Media and disrupted by the functioning of the house by chanting “No Bill, No break” and “Shame”. This protest undoubtedly got a lot of media attention for the 25 hours it lasted, however, critics claim that this was just a mere publicity stunt to showcase to the general public that the Democrats are making an effort to prevent gun violence to win votes in the election. Also, critics targeted the short duration of the protest claiming that if the Democrats really cared for change they wouldn’t...

Critiquing the representation of social justice

Image
After working with and writing on your chosen representation, critique the version or manifestation of social justice as defined/illustrated.  How does this depiction of social justice conflict with or work with the legal system? Social Justice can be defined as equity in terms of distribution of wealth, rights and resources within society. The movie Blood Diamond attempts to uncover the lack of this in third world countries as a direct result of the actions of first world countries while demonstrating the advantages people have for having white skin in certain societies. The movie highlights a practice which according to the law is considered smuggling and thus by those means cannot be considered social injustice, however, it is chain reaction caused by this smuggling that makes the practice unethical and socially unjust. The manifestation of social justice in The Blood Diamond is made explicit through the film's plot and central theme, however, throughout the movi...
