Visions and Voices 2

I attended the visions and voices event which had a panel of the producers, director and actors of the T.V. show Unreal. The show at Face value is about the intricacies of running a T.V. show such as the bachelor. However, on a much deeper level, it talks about issues in relation to sexism and racism. The T.V. show has two successful protagonists who crave money and power, thus it presents women in a way which is incongruous to the common perception of women. Adding to this, in the event all the people on the panel were female and thus they were able to speak about spoke their personal experiences with this topic. It was surprising to see that even in today's day and age all the members of the panel have had some issue with regarding sexism. People often scrutinized their ideas and at times were not taken seriously. Furthermore, the show also explores the theme of racism and with one of the members of the panel being African American spoke about the implicit discrimination she faced growing up.

All in all, it was a really interesting experience, it broadened my perspective on racism. By giving me real-life examples this opened my eyes to the fact that these social evils are still practised today and that they aren't things of the past. Moreover, I also thought that in a time where most Tv shows are pointless sitcoms or trashy TV it was really commendable for the producers to make such a show which brings to light social issues.
