Visons and voices 1
The first Visions and Voices event I attended was called dance and social change.
The evening initiated with a documentary of two African Americans dancing and getting arrested for doing so. which in my opinion is trying to portray that often people from the African American community get arrested for expressing their opinion, the documentary then focuses on the mental impact the imprisonment has on felons. The documentary ended with them getting released from prison and one of them unwilling to dance again. Thus portraying law enforcement as a negative reinforcement technique in order to kill the opinion of African Americans.
The event then had a solo performance from the protagonist of the documentary where he dances to mimic an incident which he read in the newspaper about police brutality. He recreates an event where the victim clearly has his hands in the air but is still shot by the police. But ultimately he stands up, implying that people have to stand up in protest if such cruelties have to be stopped
The event then has an interview with the performer where he showcases his experiences with dance and his struggle and the overall message he wants to portray with the help of dance.
Through Dance, Boogz is able to express his opinion in a way no words can. It captures the attention of the youth whilst simultaneously making a point of social inequality. His performance makes one think deeper on social issues which may seem simple at face value and encourages one to take action against these inequalities.
