Women and the Anti-war movement

Understanding Antiwar Activism as a Gendering Activity: A Look at the U.S.’s Anti-Vietnam War Movement

This sources elaborates on the role women played in the Anti-war movement. One of the misconceptions of the anti-war movement that I will argue against in my paper is that the movement was male dominated. However, this academic paper also argues against that hence I will be able to use examples from this paper to support my claim. Moreover this paper includes counterclaims made by feminist scholars and works towards disproving that claim. Specifically the article centers upon two questions, in what ways is war protest a gendering experience? and How does antiwar activism shape ideas about gender, instead of the other way around? The analysis of these two questions relies on a combination of primary sources : documents written by antiwar activists or observers of the movement and secondary research from historians, sociologists and gender scholars. It examines particularly two instances from the movement which are the ‘Burial of Traditional Womanhood’ in January of 1968 and the Pentagon protest  which took place in October 1967. By analysing these specific two instances the paper goes into the details and doesn’t just analyses it superficaially and thus I feel this will be a good source to include in my paper.

I have never thought about the anti-war movement from a gender perspective. This is definitely an intriguing aspect to this movement. Why do you think it is important to analyze the role of gender in this movement? Were there anything women and men did differently while protesting?

  2. Its interesting how this source hilights the interesection between two socail issues: the war and femminism. Does it seem to suggest that being involved in their anti-war movement also helped woman obtain more fair/equal treatment?
